About the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) is a very esteemed independent professional association and learned society representing mechanical engineers and engineering profession as a whole. It is headquartered in London, United Kingdom.
The Institution was founded at the Queen’s Hotel, Birmingham, by George Stephenson in 1847. The original statement of purpose was “to give an impulse to invention likely to be useful to the world”, which is not so different from their present mission statement of “improving the world through engineering.” It received a Royal Charter in 1930. The Institution’s headquarters, purpose-built for the Institution in 1899, is situated at No. 1 Birdcage Walk in central London.
IMechE has over 115,000 members in 140 countries, working across industries such as aerospace, manufacturing, energy, railways, automotive, biomedical and construction. The Institution is licensed by the Engineering Council to assess candidates for inclusion on its Register of Chartered Engineers, Incorporated Engineers and Engineering Technicians.
IMechE in India
The India Branch is developing a local support network for the rapidly-increasing number of Institution members in India. It was established in 2008. IMechE, India has over 4000 members taking advantage of diverse programme of activities and networking events. The Institution has strong connections with a variety of businesses across India in industries such as oil and gas, automobile and manufacturing.
Datum Advanced Composites and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers
Datum Advanced Composites’ Co-founder and Director, Mr Tanmay Tiwari, has been a member of IMechE, UK since 2016. During his Aerospace Engineering studies at the Swansea University, UK, Tanmay was took part in various networking events and continual professional development activities hosted by IMechE, UK. Tanmay was an integral part of the Formula Student Team at Swansea University which was co-sponsored by IMechE, this was the time when Tanmay made strong connection with the society members.
Upon his return to India, Mr Tiwari co-founded Datum Advanced Composites in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The IMechE India branch reached out to Mr Tiwari for a professional association, and invited him as a guest speaker to a webinar. Mr Tiwari shared his valuable insight with fellow IMechE members on the topic of Careers Prospects in Mechanical Engineering. This webinar was co-hosted by the esteemed Sikkim Manipal University. Tanmay was invited to the last Annual General Meeting of IMechE India where he was appointmented as the Young Member Chairperson of IMechE, India – North Panel. Mr Tiwari is looking forward to contributing to the Institution’s growth and presence in the Northern parts of India, especially in Aerospace, Defence and Automotive sectors.
